The P8400 range of test beds are designed for the operation of Lubricating Oil Tests in accordance with CEC procedures using the Petter W-l, AV-1 and AV-B Laboratory Engines. The range includes single engine and multi-engine test beds, ancillary equipment and kits of parts and special tools such that any combination of test procedures may be carried out on a given test bed. A computer control capability is provided by Cussons Autotest which is an extremely flexible and easy to use computer system allowing steady state and cyclic schedules to be constructed. The equipment incorporates dual level alarms, data calculations, display formatting and graphics presentation.
Engine testing under controlled conditions of temperature, pressure and humidity usually calls for a large capital investment in the form of a climatic chamber. Cussons Standard Air System provides an attractive and far less costly alternative. The self-contained, semi-mobile system delivers a fully conditioned air intake, provides for the accurate mapping of ambient conditions and enables clients to conduct environmental test programmes in any standard suitably sized test cell.

Cussons laminar flow air meters and display instrumentation provide an ideal method of measuring pulsating air flows and are widely used in the automotive industry. The six meters in the range cater for air flow rates from 1.6 to 650 l/sec. An ideal airflow measuring system may be achieved using a Cussons air meter with a Mass Flow Rate Computer. This unit uses a 16 bit microprocessor to display the measured variables and computed results such as volume flow rate (l/s), volume flow rate corrected to standard conditions and mass flow rate (g/s) and provides a range of system functions which enable two air meters to be used in parallel. |
In this important area, Cussons offer a comprehensive range of gravimetric and volumetric fuel flowmeters and complete fuel conditioning/measuring systems.
The Compuflow range of gravimetric fuel flowmeters is available in five sizes to cater for engines rated up to 30, 90, 270, 900 and 2700 kW respectively and are designed for either manual or automatic operation.
The volumetric range consists of five fuel conditioning/measuring systems for test cell use with flow ranges of 0.15 - 7.5 l/min, 0.15 - 15 l/min, 0.3 - 15 l/min, 0.8 - 40 l/min and 1.5 - 75 l/min.
To complement the above range and other pulse output type flowmeters Cussons P8140 Fuel Flow Data Processing system provides a comprehensive data acquisition and analysis capability for engine and vehicle test applications.
Two standard systems and accessory options cater for the routine analysis of critical in-cylinder dynamic events relating to the operation of both gasoline and diesel engines.
The system include 2-channel (gasoline) or 4-channel (gasoline/diesel) signal processing racks, necessary transducers and connecting cables, and a test bed interface unit.
A new development incorporated in the signal processing racks is Cussons Mycrosync. This microprocessor based unit, which is also available as a separate product, replaces the traditional methods of providing timing and triggering information with significant benefits in terms of features, accuracy and ease of installation and operation.
The recording and analysis of combustion related events within internal combustion engines has received considerable attention over the years with significant improvements in ease of use, in accuracy and in reliability.
Now, Cussons Technology have introduced an intelligent, affordable, multi-channel high speed engine data acquisition and analysis system. The P4500 Autoscan operates as a powerful stand alone system for derivation and analysis of routine data which can also be used as a fast front end data acquisition system for more complex analysis in a PC or host computing configuration.

A current method of indicating piston ring, cylinder liner and valve stem wear for either development purposes or "in-service" monitoring, is the measurement of cylinder gas loss in the form of "blow-by" gas which accumulates in an engine crankcase. Cussons range of "blow-by" meters use solid state vortex shedding transducers and ultrasonic flow detection to provide an effective measurement of this notoriously difficult parameter. The five meters in the range cater for flow rates from 5 to 1500 l/min and incorporate an alarm/shutdown facility. Digital and Analogue versions are available.
Transporting an exhaust sample from sample point to an analytical system or gas analysis instrument can prove to be a complicated affair due to problems such as condensation, wide temperature ranges experienced with varying engine speed/loads and climatic chamber tests and wide pressure ranges associated with turbocharged engines. These problems are effectively resolved with the Cussons range of Sampling Interface Ovens which provide thermal conditioning of either a single inlet sample, or selectable multipoint samples from 4 or 6 cylinder engines.
The High Speed Gas Sampling Systems enables a highly controlled extraction of diesel or gasoline combustion gases to be achieved directly form the combustion chamber. The system, which includes a control console, high speed sampling valves (needle or poppet options) and a crank pulse generator kit, is typically used for investigations of scavenging efficiency, exhaust gas analysis and catalysing processes.
Cussons Constant Volume Sampling system is designed to meet the requirements of the international standards for gaseous mass emissions testing.
The system incorporates up to three-mode operation with dilute sample and stabilised air bag sampling system, an EPROM based push button control system with computer and drivers aid interface capability and provision for heated sample line, heated filter and F.I.D. for ECE and Federal Light Duty Diesel applications.
The system may be calibrated using a P1520 Calibration Unit which employs a Cussons Viscous Flow Air Meter.
For steady state development work a fully mobile Variable Split Particulate Sampler P1810, is available. The unit achieves a significant reduction in physical size and cost by "splitting" the exhaust gas such that only a portion of the total flow passes to the tunnel. The total mass of particulates emitted during a test is calculated using gaseous emission concentrations combined with the flow measurement of either engine air or fuel,
The real-time mass measurement of particulates suspended in gas streams may be achieved with the P1813 Microbalance. The microcomputer-based unit enables mass, mass rate, and mass concentration to be measured, plotted and displayed. Typical applications include diesel exhaust, smoke measurement and dust concentration.
Cussons Exhaust Gas Analysis Systems for engine and vehicle test applications are structured into two product groups.
The P8390 Portable Analyser is designed for quality/audit work, legislative idle checking, fuel system checking/setting and low budget combustion analysis.
The unit caters for the measurement and display of up to four gas components namely CO, C02 and HC via solid state NDIR analysers (heater/unheated options available) and 02 via a paramagnetic analyser. Certain models incorporate a dedicated microprocessor for the determination of air fuel ration (AFR).
Cussons P7450 product range provide a research standard analysis capability in accordance with the international standards for exhaust emissions measurement. The system employs high quality instrumentation grade analysers with comprehensive heated sampling and control facilities and are designed for use with raw or diluted gas samples from either diesel or gasoline engines of light or heavy duty specification. Gas turbine and ambient air quality monitoring systems can also be supplied.
The importance of fast response measurement of air-fuel ratio (AFR) in combustion studies and fuel delivery system optimisation is well established. Lamdascan III is the latest development in AFR analysis from Cussons and provides a continuous and direct measurement of the mass air-fuel ratio during steady state and transient development tests. The mobile self-contained unit incorporates automatic range change and calibration, heated sampling for maximum durability and accuracy and built-in statistical functions.
