Cussons Technology Ltd. is a company specializing in educational technology, manufacturing and supplying a comprehensive range of mechanical engineering and research equipment for universities, technical institutes and training establishments worldwide.

Through our long association with Ricardo Consulting Engineers plc we have developed an in-house expertise which has enabled us, now as an independent company, to produce a range of research equipment and instrumentation for applications in the automotive and internal combustion engine industries. Close involvement with the industrial market sector and the development of formal systems of quality assurance IS09001 has had a significant influence on the development of the educational product range and this is apparent in terms of product specifications, quality standards, product software and after sales service.

In addition to supplying individual items of equipment in eight subject areas, Cussons undertake complete turnkey projects for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of entire laboratories, specialising in those for steam and automotive engineering. The following gives merely a glimpse into the broad range of products available while detailed specifications and product literature, including Cussons Automotive Technology brochure, are available on request.

THERMODYNAMICS

In the important area of thermodynamics education, Cussons have developed a broad range of self-contained educational products. These enable students to acquire a good practical understanding in heat transfer, refrigeration, air conditioning and work transfer based upon various types of heat engine, solar energy, properties of fuels, and general measurement relating to temperature, pressure and humidity. The units, which are either mobile or bench-mounted are complemented by a wide range of demonstration aids including sectioned components, engines, models and wall charts.

STEAM ENGINEERING

The ability to design, manufacture, install and commission complete educational steam plants has given Cussons an enviable reputation in this sphere. Plants available include a "Mini" system and 5, 10 and 20kW rated systems. Each has been designed to provide a comprehensive facility for the complete investigation of a working steam power plant. The power ratings chosen and features incorporated constitute an excellent representation of current industrial practice.

Each scheme comprises a full range of separate but compatible units which enable the complete installation to be tailored to suit precise individual requirements. A complementary range of steam bench experiments has also been developed, which enables the basic principles of steam engineering to be taught. This is essential if a complete understanding of steam systems is to be achieved.

AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING

With its long tradition in automotive engineering education and the backing of one of the world's leading engineering consultancies, Cussons can offer a comprehensive range of purpose designed engine test beds from the smallest, self-contained bench-mounted system designed to provide an introduction to the study of the internal combustion engine, to the most advanced computer-controlled, research engine test beds available in the world today. Engine test beds based on the renowned Ricardo single-cylinder research engines have been developed for use in the fields of engine combustion development studies.

An extensive range of instrumentation is available relating to the measurement of air flow, fuel flow, temperature, engine speed, air fuel ratios, gaseous and particulates exhaust emissions and various engine performance characteristics.

MECHANICS OF FLUIDS

In this important area of study, Cussons have developed a series of modules which form a comprehensive laboratory facility and enable a detailed experimental course to be followed. The equipment has been designed to provide a clear, visual appreciation of hydraulic principles and each item is accompanied with a documented experimental package.

Specific items of equipment include a basic hydraulics bench which acts as a service unit for a wide range of experiments. These relate to pump tests, flow in pipes, flow measurement, hydraulic machinery, hydrostatics, vortices, orifices, weirs, Bernoulli's experiment and jet impact.

A variety of water pump test sets are available and air flow studies including aerodynamics are catered for by Cussons air flow bench.

CONTROL ENGINEERING

Cussons range of process control equipment presents the student with a broad cross-section of control techniques, typical of applications in many areas of industry. The units demonstrate the functions of the individual components of control loops and afford the opportunity to observe the effects of altering the various control parameters.

In addition Cussons manufacture a range of equipment designed to enable students to acquire practical experience in the field of sequence control for oil-hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

STRENGTH OF MATERIALS

In the field of Strength of Materials, Cussons have concentrated on a select number of products to examine materials in tension, compression, torsion and shear.

THEORY OF MACHINES

A range of equipment is available to enhance the study of dynamics, balancing, vibrations, the whirling of shafts and the basic principle of applied mechanics.

ENGINEERING DRAWING DESIGN

Cussons engineering models, models of penetration, practical plane and solid geometry are real assets as lecture or draughting aids. A full range of sectioned components and assemblies is available.
