CUSSONS HYDRA RESEARCH TEST SYSTEMS

INTRODUCTION

Gasoline Hydra

Demand has grown significantly in recent years for light duty single cylinder research engines incorporating the latest technologies and offering the user maximum flexibility of build specification and component selection.

Over fifty years ago, George Cussons and Sir Harry Ricardo combined the diverse talents of both their organisations to bring Research Engines, accessories and test systems into the industrial and educational arena.

The Ricardo E6 Variable Compression Engine is known to engineers worldwide with a considerable number of complete test systems being supplied by Cussons Technology. This system became one of the most useful teaching and research tools ever devised for internal combustion engine laboratory work.

Some 20 years ago Ricardo Consulting Engineers, in order to fulfil an in-house requirement, recognised the need to have greater flexibility and hence the Hydra range was conceived.

Cussons Technology and Ricardo continue to work together bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience related to engine design, development and combustion studies. This being supported by the provision of complete, fully installed and commissioned systems with the necessary on-going training and technical support. To date, several hundred systems have been supplied to a broad international customer base.

There is a long term commitment to the continued development of the Hydra engine range, features and additional accessories, ensuring that customers will continue to be offered state of the art technology long into the future.

HYDRA CONCEPT

The Hydra design concept enables engines to be built having cylinder bores and strokes within the range 70mm to 100mm to achieve maximum flexibility.

Hydra also employs modular construction techniques utilising a separate crankcase, cylinder block, cylinder head and camshaft carrier. This approach has enabled engines to be built with different valve configurations and actuation methods, alternative combustion systems, including piston ported and poppet valve two stroke versions.

Resulting from the above design flexibility, a wide range of engine build options are available, either as standard product designs or as special engines to meet specific customer requirements.
